No More Toddler Temper Tantrums

A Two Year Old can do so many things!

A two year old can do so many things! Your child is not a baby any more. He is now a toddler. A two year old can enjoy shows with simple plots. Most two year olds are beginning to explore their emotions. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood is an appropriate show to help a child connect to his feelings. Barney and Sesame Street are good upbeat learning shows.

 

A two year old can listen to a story being read to them and begin to understand and follow the story line rather than just enjoying the pictures. They begin to notice the story relates to the pictures. If you ask how a character feels, the will feel emotionally attached to favorite characters, dolls or stuffed toys. Two year olds feel emotion very strongly and helping your child deal with strong emotion is the beginning of helping your child control himself, thus eliminating tantrums.

Dealing with emotion is part of being a two year old. As a parent you can help by asking how a favorite character feels when something bad happens to the character. This can be a pre-requisite to asking how the two year old feels when he is on the verge of a tantrum. Having him stomp his foot and tell you “I am mad” or “I am angry.” is a better choice than kicking and screaming on the floor or even hitting and hurting another person. Two years old is the prime time to learn language or start a second language. Don’t be afraid to teach your child “big words” Now is the time to start building a great vocabulary.

 

A two year old may like to “pretend” to read along and enjoy repetitive books like Dr. Seuss where they can chime in with the repeated words. They like to sing the chorus of well-known songs and this can be entertaining on car rides. Memory is strengthened at this time. It is good to start learning any rote prayers, poems or nursery rhymes.

 

Some two year olds are even ready for potty training. It is just another new thing to learn in a world that two year olds are anxious to explore. Don’t rush him, but if your child is ready, now is the best time to potty train. This potty training by noon is a fun, playful way to approach potty training and it really works.
