As your child approaches the terrible twos, you might be apprehensive. Many experts, on television, books and even at your doctor’s office may make you fear this time when in fact, it is a beautiful period of discovery in a child’s life. It is important to understand when a tantrum is brewing and learn how to head it off. Why does your terrible two have tantrums? A two year old has limited language skills and this leads to frustration and most initial tantrums. If a parent gives in to those tantrums, the two year old soon learns that tantruming is a way to get what he wants. If a tantrum occurs, that means you have failed to avert it this time. Don’t worry. You will get another chance to interrupt a tantrum before it gets started! Start working on your terrible twos anger management right now. Very soon you will find that the terrible twos are really terrific!
5 Tips to Stop the Terrible Twos Whine
1. Ignore the whining. No eye contact. No speech. No touching
2. Say: whining hurts my ears or I can’t understand whining
3. Put the two year old in a crib or playpen where they are safe and leave the room
4. Remind your toddler to talk in a big girl/boy voice
5. NEVER give in to whining—the child will only do it if it works.
